Why Learn French?
A lot of debate exists lately on the subject of learning to speak Spanish, especially due to the reality that many of the ilegal immigrants moving from Central to North America (as far as we know) in recent year it has jumped drastically. Some think illegal immigration would get worse if Americans learn to speak Spanish. It is widely believed that if they were made to speak English in order to survive in our culture, the immigration debate would quickly disappear by itself.
The simple fact of the matter is that Americans are extremely arrogant when it comes to their language. They have started a gradual slide into complacency due to the fact that English is a somewhat of a universal language. Nearly every country in the world makes its students to learn to speak at least Actually, European children spend a lot of time learning their own language and the tounges of the neighboring countries.
So French students study French and English, plus Italian, Spanish, and German so that they will be able to work and communicate with people around the world.
Americans haven’t had to do this because almost every foreign country teaches English to its students. It is not difficult to find someone who speaks English anywhere you go in a foreign country. This signifies that the policy of learning your neighbor’s tongue has been discarded. Americans should probably become fluent in both French and Spanish to give them an edge when doing business with Canada and Mexico; however, most Americans don’t do this because they arrogantly believe that anyone who wants to have anything to do with the United States should speak English.
Not to mention that because of the ‘melting pot’ nature of the United States’ citizens, an ‘official’ language didn’t exist until recent years. The United States is a blend of peoples, and its first settlers traveled here speaking every tongue from every corner of the globe. This is very obvious in some areas of the United States.
The French language is used widely in Louisiana, while through the states of California, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Florida, Spanish is reputed to be the “official” second tongue of the area. Throughout parts of the mid-west textbooks were printed in German until World War II, when the national distaste of all things German following Hitler’s reign of terror led to said textbooks being reprinted in English and the German language slowly but surely being nudged into obscurity.
Due to the vast diversity in linguistic origins that is possessed by the people of the United States it is hard to comprehend the source of their argument against speaking Spanish.
