Sonic The Hedgehog is the hero of the video game series created by Sega. Sonic is now one of the world’s most famous game characters, and tons of fans love to play Sonic games online for fun and entertainment.

Sonic is a blue hedgehog who has the ability to run faster than the speed of sound. This power is a major part of the game play of the series. Whether you play Sonic online or offline, you’re sure to love the high-speed hedgehog and his super-powered acquaintances like Tails the flying fox, Knuckles the Echidna, Blaze the pyrokenetic feline and Amy the female hedgehog.

Sonic is known as the world’s fastest hedgehog. His biggest strength is his astounding running speed, but many of his other powers are variants on the tendency for hedgehogs to wind into tight balls for protection – with the addition of spinning his body. Sonic’s primary offensive tactic is the basic “Sonic Spin Attack”. Some games have expanded on this basic attack, creating the “Spin Dash” which has Sonic spinning on the spot before blasting off at full speed, and the “Homing Attack”, in which he charges toward a target in the middle of the air.

One recognizable and recurring feature when you play online Sonic the Hedgehog games is the golden Rings (sometimes referred to as Power Rings or Magic Rings) scattered throughout the various game levels. This game play device allows players possessing at least one ring to endure when sustaining damage from an enemy or hazardous object. Rather than expiring, the player’s rings are dispersed. Usually, a hit will cause the player to lose all of his rings, but in certain situations it only costs a fixed amount of rings rather than the entire collection. Collecting 100 rings will usually reward Sonic (or any other playable character) with an extra life.

The Chaos Emeralds are seven emeralds with mystical powers, and are another recurring feature of Sonic games. Multiple sets of emeralds have popped up in various settings like South Island, West Side Island and Angel Island. They are the basis of most of the games’ plots, and the player is oftentimes required to collect them all in order to defeat the super villan and achieve the games’ “good endings”, super forms, or both. In some plots, the emeralds can be obtained in concealed locations within the main levels. In most later games, they are found by the characters throughout the games’ story modes. When all seven Chaos Emeralds are collected, Sonic can initiate a super transformation into “Super Sonic”, a faster and invincible version of himself that can fly.
